METALLICA's First-Ever European Headlining Show In 1984 Focus Of Dutch TV Documentary
July 29, 2014METALLICA's first-ever headlining show in Europe, which took place thirty years ago did in the small Dutch village of Zwaagwesteinde (De Westereen),is the subject of a new Dutch TV documentary, "How Metallica Raised Hell In De Westereen" (original title: "Hoe't Metallica De Westereen Op 'E Kop Sette").
Produced by Dutch public broadcaster Omrop Fryslân, the 30-minute program, which aired on June 22, contains new interviews with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich, as well as other players involved in organizing the June 9, 1984 gig, which featured TWISTED SISTER in the support slot.
"I clearly remember the venue," Kirk said. "I remember that from the dressing rooms, Cliff [Burton, late METALLICA bassist] and I watched TWISTED SISTER play. And we thought that it was the greatest thing, because it was the first time we were on tour in Europe with another band who was American."
Added Lars: "[TWISTED SISTER was] a very big band in America that had a couple of hit singles and big radio hits. So the fact that we were kind of on the same level as TWISTED SISTER was a pretty big deal to us. [laughs]"
After completing a recent European festival run, METALLICA has just one show on its calendar for the rest of 2014, at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal on August 9.
The band is slated to enter the studio and begin recording its 10th studio album this fall.
